Production starts for fastest, greenest Fiesta ST

08/02/13

PRODUCTION of the new Ford Fiesta ST has started in Cologne, Germany, ahead of the model’s on-sale debut in spring.

More than half of the entire European production schedule is destined for Britain, which is a fast Ford fan base like no other.

Arriving in UK showrooms by late March or early April, the Fiesta ST is the first Fiesta to leave the factory capable of hitting 62mph from rest in under seven seconds, but the car has also averaged an astonishing 48mpg on the European combined fuel economy cycle.

Due to be priced from £16,995, the Fiesta will also be relatively cheap to tax, with CO2 emissions rated at 138g/km putting it in road tax band E, which currently costs £120 per year.

A special feature of its 179bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine is an overboost facility, which allows the motor to produce around 200bhp for limited bursts. The car is both faster to 62mph and at the top end than the old Ford Focus ST170 – which is no surprise given its increased power and torque.

Insiders at Ford have reported that the engineering prototypes set a new standard in handling and driver enjoyment, and at an affordable price the Fiesta ST is likely to be a strong seller with Ford’s target set at 5,000 units per year on these shores.

“The new Fiesta ST is a very modern performance car built on more than 30 years of fast Fiestas and a global development process,” said Juergen Gagstatter, chief programme engineer, Performance Cars, Ford of Europe.

“This vehicle is a significant step forward, both in terms of our proud heritage of blending a powerful engine with a dynamic chassis, and also in achieving reduced fuel consumption and emissions.”
