New naming structure for Infiniti

INFINITI is to rename its entire range under a new nomenclature system from 2014.

The Japanese premium car maker will re-badge all its new models from that time using either Q or QX designations in an effort to boost their prestige feel and recapture some of the company’s heritage and its first car, the Q45.

Starting the new model lines will be the Q50, an all-new luxury saloon that will be unveiled in January 2013 at the North American International Automobile Show (NAIAS).

While the Q label will be used for saloons and any future estates or hatchbacks the company may plan, QX will be saved for SUVs and crossovers. Every model will have a double-digit numerical suffix.

Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Limited, said: “Over the past few months we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers, and our business partners about our brand.

“The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident. To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework.

“After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that ‘Q’ captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasising our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45 – Infiniti’s first iconic flagship product in 1989.”
